Pros:
Discover the joy of making soy milk in the comfort of your own home. For too long I purchased my soy milk from the grocery store. Not to mention the unwanted additives (oils and preservatives) and excessive amounts of sugar, the price point of store bought soy milk was just too high. The Joyoung DJ13U Soy Milk Maker makes the entire soy milk making process a simple and enjoyable experience.
To make soy milk ever morning, all I have to do is some preparatory planning. First and foremost, I always soak soy beans before making soy milk. The night before I will soak usually 1/2 cup of soybeans with a dash of baking soda for 8 hours. Upon waking up I rinse the soybeans and run them through the soy milk making function in the Joyoung. In 25 minutes I will have a hot batch of soy milk ready for use. Great when pairing the soy milk with my morning tea, which will produce enough soy milk for 4-5 cups of tea.
Besides making soy milk, all kinds of milks and drinks can be made in this nifty Joyoung machine. In particular, I find grain milks to be especially satisfying and a joy to make. Overall, I still prefer to classic taste of soybeans, but drinks made of oat groats, flax seed, and rye berries all have been quite satisfying. Beyond that, nut milks can also be made, but it will require a bit more fine tuning since it is not a programmed function of the machine.
Simplicity and functionality are the biggest selling points of the Joyoung DJ13U. The digital control panel of the Joyoung make the entire soy milk making process as easy as pressing a button. Honestly, the most difficult parts of operating this machine are the cleanup process and remembering to presoak the beans and grains the night before. Otherwise, an elderly person (even a Mandarin speaker) will be able to operate the Joyoung on a daily basis without any major hassle.
Cons:
Compared to the SoyaJoy G4, you are going to have a bit less capacity to make soy milk. While the Joyoung is by no means small, it certainly is noticeably smaller than the SoyaJoy (a whole 400 mL smaller). This will not prevent making bulk soy milk, but it means you will be limited by about 25% at max capacity versus the market leading SoyaJoy. Not a big deal if you are just making soy milk for daily or every other day uses.
Joyoung DJ13U vs SoyaJoy G4
- Nearly $50 separates these two Soy Milk Makers. At $140, the SoyaJoy G4 is substantially cheaper than the Joyoung DJ13U. As a market leader too, the SoyaJoy G4 offers some of the best features out of all Soy Milk Makers. Between the two machines, features are nearly similar.
Design:
- Aesthetically, the Joyoung Soy Milk Maker is far more beautiful. Joyoung takes great pride in the visual design of their appliances. With the Joyoung you will get a machine with a rich, creamy white color, accented by a gold lining. SoyaJoy look much more utilitarian. All in all though, the machines perform the job they were design to do, but I vastly prefer the idea of displaying the Joyoung on my kitchen counter versus the SoyaJoy.
Functions:
- Both Soy Milk Makers are filled with bonus features. Each machine specifically has a function to make grain milks and raw milks/juices. Beyond that, the SoyaJoy seems to perform better as soup maker than the Joyoung. However, the Joyoung includes cooking functions in both English and Chinese which is a great bonus for older Chinese immigrant who miss the taste of actual soy milk.
Overall:
- Both Soy Milk Makers will be sure to please any buyer. While the Joyoung is almost $50 more expensive, I honestly just prefer it more because it is a beautiful appliance. In terms of the soy milk making process though, you will do slightly better with going for the SoyaJoy G4 Soy Milk Maker.
Value for Money?
The Joyoung DJ13U is all one can ask for in a Soy Milk Maker. Making soy milk, or any grain/nut milk, is beyond simple. Yes, some extra steps and speedy cleanup are needed to make your own milk, but the quality of the drink is beyond worth it. When buying your own organic soy beans, you will begin saving money instantly by not being forced to buy soy milk from the store. Also, milks like oat milk and flax milk are near impossible to get at convenient locations, so homemade is really the only way to go. Overall, I give the Joyoung DJ13U a total of 5/5 stars.
